ان معظم الآثار الموجودة فى السوق، هى آثار مقلّدة وليست حقيقية، حيث يتم تقليدها فى مناطق عديدة فى مصر منها "الاقصر" و"المنيا". ويهدف المتحف إلى حماية هؤلاء الفنانون من ملاحقة الأجهزة الأمنية التى اعتادت ضبط منحوتاتهم من التماثيل واللوحات الفرعونية، بعد بيعها على أنها قطع أثرية، وليست منحوتات حديثة، والقبض على مشتريها من السياح والمصريين، وإحالتهم إلى المحاكمة بتهمة الإتجار فى الآثار, وذلك بسبب دقة نقوشها ورسومها الفرعونية.
ويتم تقليد التماثيل الأثرية عن طريق عمل صورة طبق الأصل منها بإستخدام حجارة قديمة يتم دفنها، بعد تشكيلها، فى الأرض لمدة تتراوح من ثلاثة شهور إلى ستة شهور فى ظروف معينة، ويتم دهانها ببعض المواد الكيميائية حتى يصعب على غير المختص اكتشاف هذه الق
ولمنع التلاعب والغش اخترع الدكتور "مصطفى عطية"، رئيس قسم الترميم بكلية الآثار جامعة القاهرة، طريقة للكشف عن مدى أصالة القطع الأثرية، وذلك لكى يحمى الآثار والحضارة المصرية من حوادث السرقة، وقد سجل براءة هذا الإختراع بالإتحاد الأوروبى ووزارة البحث العلمى بـ"بولندا"، حيث أقر علماء أوروبا بأن الطريقة التى تم التوصل إليها يصعب على مافيا سرقة الآثار فى العالم بالرغم من التطور العلمى التغلب عليها حتى بعد مائة عام.
والطريقة المُخترعة تعتمد على إستخدام "الميكروسكوب"، وتكبير الأثر حتى درجة معينة، لكى يتم اكتشاف خاصية فيزيائية تميز الأثر، ويستحيل تكرارها فى القطع المقلدة، حيث أن هذه الطريقة المبتكرة تعتمد على بصمة التوزيع المتفرد لحبيبات المواد الملونة وتكبيرها إلى درجة (100%)، وهى تختلف عن الطرق القديمة التى يستخدمها المجلس الأعلى للآثار، والتى تعتمد على أخذ تفاصيل دقيقة من مكان محدد من اللوحة، وعمل تكبير لها لمعرفة تفاصيلها الفنية 
بصمات سرية على الآثار
وهناك العديد من محاولات استبدال آثار حقيقية بأخرى مقلدة، قد تم اكتشافها والكشف عنها، منها إعلان الأثري "قدري كامل"، عن اكتشافه حقيقة استبدال لوحة "أمنمحات"، بلوحة أخرى مزورة أثناء عرضها في اليابان، وذلك عندما تشككك أن اللوحة المعروضة باليابان تختلف عن اللوحة التي سافرت مع المعرض من القاهرة، وهو ما يعني استبدالها بأخرى مزورة، وبناء على هذه الشكوك قام بمقارنة الصور الدقيقة التي التقطها للوحة الأثرية قبل السفر، ومقارنتها باللوحة المعروضة، فإذا به يكتشف العديد من الإختلافات الدقيقة التي لا يمكن للمشاهد العادي اكتشافها، وقد أحدث هذا الحدث ضجة إعلامية كبرى تقرر بعدها وضع بصمات سرية على الآثار قبل سفرها للعرض في دول أخرى.
الفارق بين الأثر الحقيقي والمقلد
إن الفارق بين الأثر الحقيقي والمقلد، يبدأ من نوع وتكوين مادة القطعة الأثرية، فالحجرمهما كان نوعه، تُعرف حقيقته من خلال وزنه، فكلما قل الوزن كان الحجر حقيقياً وقديماً، هذا إلى جانب طريقة نحت التمثال والتناسق الفني البعيد عن العيوب، وطريقة كتابة النصوص والخراطيش الملكية على التمثال، ودقة الحروف وطريقة رسمها وحفرها.
أما بخصوص القطع المعدنية، فهى تختلف تبعاً لنوع المعدن، فإذا أُزيلت الطبقة الأولى وكانت الطبقة التالية بذات 
أما أصالة النسيج فتعرف من نوعه وتاريخ ظهوره، كما يُعرف أيضًا من أسلوب زخرفته وألوانه، والرسوم المصاحبة لكل عصر، وكذلك الأمر في السجاد، الذي أُنتشر تهريبه، فيعرف من الزخرفة، والألوان ومكوناتها، والعقد، وكلها تختلف مع اختلاف العصور، وأماكن الصناعة.
بينما الخزف يُعرف من خلال مادته، وطريقة صناعته، ونوعه وزخرفته التي تختلف بإختلاف العصور.
هذا بالإضافة إلى اللوحات الفنية التى تُعد من أهم الفنون التي يلجأ البعض إلى تقليدها، وتقليد توقيع فنانها بدقة بالغة، ولكن يمكن تحديد حقيقتها من خلال الألوان المستخدمة فيها، ومدى تغيرها مع الزمن وطريقة أسلوب الفنان الأصلي في الرسم واتجاه الفرشاة.
أول متحف للاثار المقلدة
وايمانًا بأن من يقومون بتقليد الآثار بدقة متناهية هم فنانون، تم إقامة أول متحف لمنحوتات"الفراعنة الجد
كما أن هذا المتحف يحكي لزائره عن سبل الحياة اليومية في مصر الفرعونية وحتى اليوم، عبر نماذج مجسمة تصور حياة الريف والحضر، وتتيح للسائح أن يحيا يومًا كاملاً في أي عصر يختاره.
